In Time…
The law of process
I was in a conversation with a group of millennials and as the conversation went on, they brought up the topic on how GenZ’s are always chasing money.
“This new generation, they don’t know how to slow things down, they don’t care about anything else except money. That’s why “yahoo” is so common now. It’s just quick/fast money you guys know, you don’t know how to slow down and wait for your time…” I’m sure you know how these conversations go.
As I was careful preparing my line of argument, I decided last minute to shut up and listen to understand if they have a point hidden somewhere.
“You guys don’t know how to slow down and wait for your time…”
As much as this can be interpreted for and against the motion of Millennials used to seeing “shege” and passing aggression on the new generation that is traumatized by “shege” they witnessed, this point of view can also be connected to the law of process.
On another occasion, I met up with a close friend from secondary school and we were talking about how it’s looking like all our age mates have “blown”, gotten money, except from us.
In the lines of “where are these people seeing money, God abeg, is it we’re not serious with our own lives?😂”
And although young people making money can be connected to so many backyard means, this letter is about the legal straight cut, no shenanigans process of wealth and knowledge accumulation.
We’re in such a hurry to have 100 million dollars in our bank accounts, travel the world, acquire real estate, a huge investment portfolio and other exciting things in life that we forget that we just started climbing the ladder, WE’RE JUST STARTING THE PROCESS and these things take time.
Personally, I have a toxic trait of downplaying my successes and thinking that wherever I am right now is not where I’m “supposed” to be. Then, when I face challenges along the way, I beat myself up for weeks on end, complaining that I feel “stuck”, “stagnant” and worst of all, still “broke”. And I’m sure I’m not the only one that thinks this way.
Reality Check; We’re still in our 20’s, we’re supposed to be figuring things out.
Ezinne Zara in one of her YouTube videos said “you are not stuck, you are not stagnant, you are exactly where someone in their 20’s is supposed to be. Which is figuring out life”
We’re all so influenced by the media portraying someone that made their first million at 16, bought their first house at 18 and is travelling the world at 20. We compare and calculate our ages, thinking, “why didn’t I make my first million at 16, look at this girl, does she have three heads, this is where I’m supposed to be”
LMAO, who told you that? In this scenario, for someone to have made their first million by 16, do you know how early they started working? Have you sat down to listen to their own process?
Your Influencers, teen actors all the people you compare yourselves to, can you search or recall how early they started working to get to where they are now?
Don’t get so caught up in the future that you loose sight of what you’re supposed to learn in the present.
Stop comparing yourselves to people that started their race long before you knew they were running.
Yes, personal ambition is good, and sometimes it’s not even about comparison, it’s just the unnecessary pressure we place on ourselves to go above and beyond at 22, when majority of us are still trying to figure out the correct response for the interview question, “Tell me about yourself”.
You didn’t become a graduate in 6 months, you didn’t learn to code and land a job in 6 months, and even if you did, you kept learning on the job. So why do you now feel like you’ll become wealthy, “blow”, at the snap of your fingers?
Show yourself a level of grace, applaud your wins. Keep the grind moving but remember that the aim is to be better than you were yesterday.
You’re on your own unique journey, use your process to learn everything you need to learn to get where you want to be.
In the marvel universe, there’s something called a “Canon Event” meaning, “shared experiences that are inevitable and crucial to the development of a person’s character and identity”.
So, whatever you feel right now, you’re supposed to feel it and the mistakes you’ve made, you were supposed to make them. Everything is all part of the process and plan for you to become the person you’re going to be.
BREATHE! You’ll get there.
