How was camp?
I have written and re written this, so many times but every time I try, I can’t seem to make leeway of the complicated web that is NYSC camp.
At the start of the 21 days, if you had asked me how camp was, I’d have boldly told you that I was suffering, that I was a blink away from bankruptcy and I needed to leave like yesterday.
But now?
Now I have mixed feelings, the red flags are starting to look orange and the seconds of fun are starting to outweigh the heavy amounts of shege I faced.
Answering the question of how NYSC camp was for me is like filling a questionnaire with options “agree, strongly agree, disagree, strongly disagree” Unnecessary confusion.
Camp gave me the opportunity to meet amazing people and build friendships that I hope to sustain but camp also doesn’t let you settle in.
It’s like sneaking a few pieces of fried plantain in your mouth and not getting the chance to eat the full meal.
You get to week 3 and you realize that there are a lot of potential friendships you hoped you had a chance to explore, and things you’d have done differently if there was time.
The irony is that initially you were begging time to run as fast as possible now, you’re begging time to slow down just a tiny bit. Now going home seems unreal and you’re left thinking, “Is it really time? Am I really leaving?”
Going into camp I made a pact with myself to have fun, to participate wholeheartedly in the activities that I could participate in and I’m so happy I did. Granted there were some things I should have done that I didn’t have the courage to but, the things I did do, I’m happy I did them.
One of the highlights of my experience was joining Man O War Special Squad. I was in Keffi camp and we definitely had a good laugh😂. I’m back home, singing the moral songs to my siblings so they understand how ridiculous it sounds😂.
P.S; If you get posted to a school, moral songs will definitely be fun to hear the students sing it back to you.
Camp also got me intrigued by the various ranking and sections in the Nigerian army. I have no friend or relation in that field so I had and still have a million and one questions to ask if given a chance.
For example; the 6am and pm salute, the different colors of cuffs on their trousers. Did you know that women are referred to as “other men?” Why do they all carry around a wooden stick?
Fun fact: Omo oba, on IG was in my camppp. (Look her up)
Whenever I saw her I’d always tried my best to hide my excitement😅 make I no go disgrace my village people.
When i finally spoke to her, she was actually really friendly, it was nice meeting her in person.
So now, how was camp?
Camp was good, I met interesting people and mami market unapologetically took my money 😂 but if there was a chance to do it all again, I wouldn’t 🚶♀️🚶♀️🚶♀️
How was camp for you? I’d love to read about your experiences in the comments😁.
Catching Up 😗
I’ve been struggling to get back into schedule since I got back home, and now I’m trying to fight malaria… aftermath from NYSC camp.
Slowly but surely, we’re coming back stronger.
How have you been since I was last here? Any good news? Or anything exciting to share?
